LeVar Burton Honored With Sacramento Park Renamed After Him

On June 11, LeVar Burton will return to his hometown of Sacramento, Calif., to attend a ceremony in his honor. According to ABC10, the citys Richfield Park will be named after the famed actor for his prowess within entertainment. Councilmember Larry Carr also noted that Burton’s accolades can inspire young people who want to follow in his footsteps. “Mr. Burton’s career accomplishment shows the possibilities that are open to all residents, no matter where they come,” Carr said. “He is an inspiration to our youth, to people of our community and to everyone in Sacramento.”

Burton’s acting career began since the late ’70s with his role in Almos’ a Man. From there, the 62-year-old thespian starred in other films like Roots, Ali, and a number of Star Trek productions. Also, can’t forget his legendary command of Reading Rainbow. On June 6, the PBS show celebrated its 36th year anniversary.

In response to a tweet announcing the park’s renaming ceremony, Burton said he couldn’t believe the honor was coming his way. “This one is special,” he said. “I’m still pinching myself.”
